Central Valley cities among the fastest growing in U.S.

• Fresno now bigger than Sacramento
Three of the fastest growing cities in the United States are in the Central Valley, the U.S. Census Bureau says Thursday. Bakersfield, Visalia and Elk Grove in the Central Valley are on the Top 25 list along with Lancaster, Irvine, Fontana and Palmdale.
The Los Angeles suburb of Lancaster with a population of nearly 141,000 and 5 percent growth rate ranks 10th in the country, the highest ranking of any California city.
Bakersfield with a growth rate of 4.3 percent year over year is ranked as the nation's 14th fastest growing city. Visalia is ranked 19th with a 3.7 percent growth rate. Elk Grove, which was the nation's fastest growing city when the statistics came out a year ago, is slowed to 24th with a growth rate of 3.1 percent, the Census Bureau says.
The city of Fresno now ranks as the nation’s 36th largest city with a population estimated at 466,714 last July 1. That was up 5,260 in a year.
Fresno is now larger than the city of Sacramento, ranked 37th in the country by the Census Bureau, at 453,781 residents as of July 1, 2006. That’s up 2,038 in a year’s time.

Overall, seven California cities make this year's ranking of the 25 fastest-growing big cities, the Census Bureau says.
